Check out the wrap on this French horn-------looks unusual to me. I wonder if this layout would have an application in tuba wraps.

This is a compensating Walzenhorn of the Lehmann type. Made by a number of German and Czech makers, but foremostly by Lidl, which also made my sample.
I cannot find a photo right now, but the late Tommy Johnson had two Yamaha 822(?) F tubas modified to F & CC compensating double tubas this way. I guess somebody will come up faster with a photo than I am able to.

Thanks for the photo, Brian!
Walze in German translates to something like a roll in English. The Walzenhorn has 3 normal 1-story rotors and the long 4-story rotor. One story handles the shift from Bb to F. In the Bb position the roll valve acts as the bottom crook of the three first valves. In the F position it acts as a double through for the 3 first valve loops thereby adding the compensating loops to the Bb loops thereby turning them into F loops.
On my Lidl Walzenhorn the base position in contrast to other compensating double horns is in F. And this low F side in contrast to other compensating horns is very free blowing. However there is one factor preventing these horns becoming universally loved. The 2nd valve loop can neither be tuned nor pulled on either of the Bb and F sides.
The modified tuba of Tommy Johnson’s works in a slightly different way. The Walzen rotor also has 4 stories here, but they are handling the compensating loops for the 4 first valves. The shift valve between the F and CC sides is the original 5th rotor.
