Follow on from Ben's post about Brahms 2, I have forthcoming concert with Liszt Les Preludes coming up. I have previously played on F (PT-15), but am considering using my CC (Neptune) instead this time.
Which do you think is best for this work and why? Range wise it works fine on either. I will be playing with symphony orchestra about 85 strong.

It's a very large work, so the contrabass big sound shouldn't be a problem. Certainly the tonality lends itself better to a C tuba.

Big horn for me too. If I had an excellent 4/4 CC tuba I might use that, depending on the usual variables (section, acoustic, orchestra etc).
For me, the tuba part in this piece is more about adding to the bottom end, rather than blending with the trombones. The extra presence (of a CC) is useful in the longer notes, for the moving passages it doesn't need extra weight.
Enjoy!

Heresy maybe, but am I the only one finding this one being in an ideal range for a large Eb?

It may be problematic that the above part comes out a bit large on your screens, but the files wen’t particularly large.
Obviously I like reading parts and scores myself, and there is this not very secret agenda about making interesting tuba parts
available for the fun of the majority of tubists not likely getting in touch with orchestral tuba playing.

It only follows, if you are going to play a big horn you need big music.

I've only played this on my CC horn..because it's all I have. But if I had an F horn, I would still choose CC. It lies pretty well on the big horn.

Thanks for the feedback guys - sound pretty conclusively to play the Neptune!
When I think about it, the main reason I played F previously was because the concert also included Berlioz and I could not be bothered to take two tubas.

Of course, with great sound comes great responsibility. That big "signature lick" that comes up at the beginning and end must be 100% true to the count and the ensemble. But I'm sure you already knew that.
