VMI model 3171 Euphonium - opinions please?

In my search for a euphonium or bass I have been offered a private sale of a VMI model 3171 Euphonium in "95%" condition for $800. Includes hard case and two mouthpieces.
I am also looking at a Yamaha YEP 321 for $800 and a Yamaha 321S for $1049. Both in in excellent condition.
I know you can't decide for me but your opinion are the most valuable out there.
With much appreciation, what do you think-? and THANKS!

NO QUESTION, I'd go for the 321S, if all horns are in good condition.

Note that the VMI 3171 is large shank; the 321 (unless the previous owner had it modified) is small shank. For my money, I'd go with a large shank over a small shank horn every time.

The 321 mouthpipe tube is reasonably large bore, and it should be easy to locate a stock large shank receiver that will fit well. I believe you would enjoy playing a YEP-321 with a larger-than-small-shank-will-allow mouthpipe backbore.
Good to know that -- I know people have mentioned swapping the standard leadpipe for one from a 642, but a receiver swap sounds a lot easier (and less expensive).

And therefore create a significant constriction at the mouthpiece-leadpipe interface, significantly altering the slotting, resistance, and intonation of the horn.
Hmm ... wonder what a repair tech wouldn't mention something like that. Couldn't be because he sees a chance to make a fast buck, could it?

Boy, about half of that (underlined) is still Greek to me. But I'll get it.
I should know which horn tomorrow. I am like a kid with anticipation. (I am probably not mature enough to be on here)
