It was a really fine concert. As in the past, I really enjoyed the conference. Outstanding performances and great fun & fellowship with many others, including a number of TubeNet, or TNFJ members.

Them Basses sounded, and looked, fantastic! I pity that Australian guy. :D

Tom Bough was sitting next to me when they started the music for Them Basses, and I asked him why he wasn't up there. He said, "I'm done." I sympathized, heh.

Tim Buzbee's performance demonstrated everything that can be good about a tuba solo--and he played the crap out of it. When the Romans marched in, they MARCHED IN. It was nice to hear someone play utterly without fear. It was also nice to hear someone play something that actually intended to be entertaining, which could not be said for everything that was performed at the conference. I should not have missed his recital but I did.

Tom Bough also played music that was fun to listen to and obviously fun for him to play, and he played it well. His composition was an homage to Pilafian, his teacher, and it was quite effective with a range of different styles.

We had difficulty hearing the soloists during many of the performances. It wasn't that the band was playing too loudly--they were obviously playing right down. It seemed mostly that the composers being presented didn't make room for the soloists. Note to self: When writing a concerto for brass quintet and band, make a clear distinction between what the brass quintet is doing versus what the brass section of the band is doing--after all--the quintet should demonstrate something the regular brass section does not demonstrate, or there's no reason to feature them.
