4+1 CC 4/4 Tubas?

Greetings,

I thought you all might be able to provide me a quick list of 4/4 CC tubas with four pistons and one rotor. I know of the Conn 56J, Getzen G(CB)-50 and the Kalison Daryl Smith. What are some others in the 4/4 size? I'm not looking for a BAT. Thanks!

Make sure you try a 5xJ before buying it. The one I play, and I've heard that others have the same issue, is hyper on 2nd line C and also has a nice sharp 4th partial. I've not played a G50 but I strongly urge you to try that before a 5xJ or a, shudder, Kalison. In a world of tubby tubas, the DS is a friggin bucket of lard that sounds like a euphonium in a bad way. Wait, I know a good comparison! It's like they took a PT6p, shrunk it, and stuffed a bit more lard into it. :P

There are a bunch of horns that fit your description. The Miraphone 1291-2 & 3 all fit, several Meinl Weston models (2145), the Nirschl 4/4, and the Yamaha YCB-844, it's a wide open selection.

I'm sure someone will say, that's not a 4/4 but they are all about the same size.

Don't forget to try a Gnagey custom built horn. They are fantastic horns and one is for sale used on this very forum (Rivercitytuba). If his is anything like my horn was, you won't be upset about trying that horn out!

Thanks for the endorsement of the Gnagey York. Here is the link to my ad.

The B&S 606P is a fine 4/4 tuba as well.

I would like to put in a strong vote in favor of a Kalison DS, despite what some may think. I have heard that they can be inconsistent, but I have had no complaints with mine, and it has served me well in every imaginable type of ensemble. Try before you buy, always, but I could not be happier with the one I play now. I don't post much anymore, but I would hate to see these horns misrepresented.

Don't forget the Meinl Weston 2145 and Miraphone 1291(2,3).
+1 on those...
can't go wrong with either.
