The boss is okay, not super clean, has occasional tracking problems. The new Electro Harmonix stuff seems to work like magic, though.

Once at a jam session I traded fours with Brad Terry, a wonderful clarinetist. He had a microphone on his clarinet connected to an octave divider that put him into the same register as my BBb tuba. It was a humbling experience.

Don't the TC Helicon products do octave transpositions (and more)? I am only vaguely familiar with their capabilities? They are available on ebay.

Hi! I think you're going to have a hard time finding a suitable mic! Instead, I would try and find a transducer type pickup. I use a fishman and a K&K on my 5-string upright Bass with no problem! You will want a preamp to use down stream of the transducer, for impeadance matching and EQ-ing! Also, you need a decent Bass amp, or to be plugged in to a PA system with good woofers and subs!
Good luck,
Al

I have an octave doubler on my Ashdown 4x10 bass amp. That thing will really rattle the windows, doors and walls!

I used to use Barcus-Berry transducers and pre-amps. They were pretty good. I sold my stuff several years ago. Don't know if they are still around or not.

@KiliteTuba: Google 'microphone 20hz'. There are tons of microphones of all types rated down to 20Hz. 20Hz-20kHz is pretty common.

Dan, Ive been thinking about getting one of the multi-effeccts units in lieu of a string of pedals. Are the effects pretty good or are there some cheesy ones? I'm looking for something with some good delays and looping ability.

This Korg multi-effects unit will do far more that what I've required of it. It's pretty elaborate with loads of 'canned' effects plus the ability to do some custom effects. The REALLY good thing is that you don't need to string a bunch of pedals together and mess with all the cords. The bad thing might be that you have to remember what switches do what!

Digitech Synth bass wah has a very good octavider. Super fast tracking and lots of other fun 'synth' sounds. I like it so much, I use 3 in my setup.

Anyone hook this up to a mic'd tuba just for giggles??

This seems to be the only reliable option to get you the octave up as well as down.

I'm convinced I need one for my bass....

Now there's the perfect solution for the poor rotary F player who can't get that low C to come out. Play up an octave and use the divider!

When you daisychain a bunch of devices, you degrade the signal with every cord and gizmo. It plays havoc with the s/n ratio, and makes even an unprocessed signal sound worse.
