Brass 5tet recording suggestions

Hello, everyone!

The brass quintet that I am a part of is considering recording a CD later in the semester. So far we have a nice list of what we want to record, but I was wondering if anyone else would have some suggestions for repertoire.

Here's what we have so far:

Brass Quintet--Jan Koetsier
Colchester Fantasy--Eric Ewazen
Concertino for Harp and Brass Quintet--Rayner Brown
West Side Story Suite--Bernstein, arr. Jack Gale
Escape--Kevin McKee

We're specifically looking for at least one more smaller piece to fit in between the multi-movement works. If possible, I'd like to include something that is newish, and a lot more "modern" sounding than the other pieces. However, I am open to suggestions.

Thanks!
Aaron H.

One of my personal favorites that I believe fits into your criteria is the Cheetham Scherzo.

I would suggest you record an ORIGINAL work, written (or commissioned) by a composer you know. NOTHING beats a new work or arrangement that no one else has in their library.

DITTO!

Every standard piece that you record will be compared to the other versions available, unless you can compare favorably with Canadian and Empire, etc., your efforts (and sales!) will be less successful.

Orginal arrangements or compositions work to your advantage.

Don't forget to get a mechanical license.

Since you already have the harp, may I suggest a piece that I have enjoyed playing:

Music For Scrimshaws by William Schmidt (for Brass Quintet and Harp):

Three short movements:
Of the Sea and Ships
Of Whales and Whaling
Of Sailors and Maidens Fair

Any or all movements may work for you.

Another suggestion that may work:
Sharagan And Fugue by Alan Hovaness

Best wishes and let us know when the recording is available! :tuba:
