I'm going to guess that said store has a 2 word name starting with "Broo" .
The F. Schmidt they're probably talking about is their stencil of a VMI2103:

Not a bad horn, but not a Miraphone 186 either and retailing for more than a grand less than the 186. Wonder why they don't want to sell him the Miraphone?
F.S. Schmidt tubas??

I like my 2301 alot and compares favorably to the 186 in my opinion. At the price I got it new, it was a steal. Since I recieved it, they bumped up the price $600 since last year and now it looks a little less appealing. Right now actually Brasswind sells the VMI 2301 for $100 less, unless they give serious discounts to education, it think BM is trying to take your friend for a ride.
If you are going to slum it though, the Jupiter 582 are decent horns plus go for about $900 less (when you factor in case costs) than the 2301 and is a piston horn with less parts to break.
As a sidenote/alternative, I know they used to sell the VMI 3301 under their stencil. They were going for under 4K too. You might want to ask your friend if they have any of those coming in stock soon. If you read around the board, they are generally considered superior to the 2301, but they have such a huge piston throw....

BTW, the picture's wrong in the BM's website.
Thats how it should look:

and they dropped the price again.... $165 less.

My Zeiss BBb has an obnoxiously big bore in the valve section for a 4/4 horn -- .890" or something like that. It just doesn't sound as big as, say, a Getzen G50.Bigbew wrote:My friend was asking about the bore size on the F. Schmidt. It is a bit smaller than the Mirafone, and he is concerned that the sound won't be as big on the Schmidt.
There's a lot more to the "bigness" of sound than bore size. The only way to know for sure, of course, is to try them out in person.

They actually do have 3301's (5 Valves too) instock or so the website says. They seem to be very popular on the board and still are less price the the Miraphones. (See the VMI/Sternberg thread)
It doesn't seem to mention where the measure the bore. In my experience also, if HS kids are going to be playing this horn. Example: I absolutley love the sound out of the King 2341 and that thing has only like a .67 inch bore and still puts out tons of whatever. Also, if these kids are going to be switching between sousaphones which have the same sized bore, its much easier to switch between horns.
I guess probably the most important thing is budget, in this case still. lost of other people have voiced thier opinions if you look in the archieves.
