Two approaches:
a: The selections on the US and the UK eBay auctions are not the same, but your desires have to be special, if they will not be met on the US variant eventually.
b (assuming you have signed up with the US eBay): If you still want to consider stuff on the UK eBay variant, then save the interesting stuff to your watch list. Open the items from your watch list, and there should appear an automatic conversion of the price to US$.
From that point you should consider
whether the seller will at all ship out of the UK
shipping costs
US customs
potential state import VAT (don’t know whether this applies in the US, but it does in the EU).

May I ask what it is you want to purchase from the UK? There isn't much you can get there that you cannot get in the states, and whatever you think you can't find here you can.
So what are you after? Ultimately any bargain you might find washes away after shipping and duties (both US and EU VAT). If you are after a particular item, there are people who can help you find it domestically.

It is admirable to defend the business of ones own country, but please stay with the truth:
No private EU sellers have to add VAT to their eBay sales. Professional EU sellers in general include their national VAT percentage in the auction price. If not there shall be a notification about VAT being added to the final sum.
With all exports out of the EU any VAT paid in the actual deal will be refunded by the exporting state’s custom authorities. It will take some paperwork, but if handled right the VAT will be refunded (this of course does not go with private deals where no VAT has been paid).

Some ebay listings, depending on how you log in, will display local currency equivalents as the auction progresses. Then use PayPal if you win. But keep good track of the exchange rate and the progress of the auction so you don't overbid your budget.

Just be aware that this can only be used as a guide, all rates will differ depending on when you send the money (including time of day), which company you use for sending it etc etc. For small amounts paypal is a handy alternative, but for larger amounts I would do some more research, there are many companies out there that will do your transactions much cheaper - most of which only advertise online (although they will have actual people doing actual jobs, who you can talk to). If you want to get ripped off properly, go to your bank and do the transaction.
