Is the Dillon Travel tuba available at retail? I didn't see it on Dillon's site.

Yes, it's available, or at least one was available. You'll have to call them on the phone and ask about it.

I always wonder that too. I know some people prefer to give their views privately by PM in case they are shot down on the public forum, or have thoughts they don't want publicised, but how to respond should be up to the writer.

What would be really interesting would be to hear from someone who has played the Dillon model against the MW travel tuba to give a comparison.

Based on the one they had at the USABTEC, I'd say they have a ways to go in developement, IMO. I am confident they will have a winner (at the right price) when they are done.

I have a definte use for one of these @ the $1600 range. I have no use for one at the $7K+ range. YMMV.

I sure when the rubber hits the road, Matt will put something up on their web site, then wee will all have two of them.

I have played the Dillon Travel F while I was alone (no one else was playing) at the store. I was playing around with a bunch of F's and Davin brought that out just as I was finishing playing a Yamaha 822F. I felt like I went from the most free blowing F tuba to the stuffiest (the bore is similar to a french horn).

That being said, after a few minutes, I was playing it a bit better. I started to get the hang of how to make my air match with the horn's need (I was way over blowing at first coming from the 822). The valves were very small and the bore was very small which is also another reason I was having trouble. Davin did mention that they are planning to try it with bigger valves, I remember him saying something about them using trumpet or french horn rotors, and the next step was trying to fit tuba valves on with an overall bigger bore. Anyway, I feel this can be a useful tool for those of us that need to bring a tuba somewhere it would be inconvenient to carry one.

I feel that at this price, definitely worth getting if you need a compact travel tuba for practice purposes. I would wait to see how the bigger valves design develops and try that one out. I'd imagine it would be way less stuffy and better in a few other ways. Matt and Davin are both great guys and have some great ideas about tubas. I trust them both to help with the design some top notch Dillon tubas.

FWIW I have also played a MW travel tuba at 2009 TUSABTEC, and I remember thinking it was stuffy until playing it for a while as well. I haven't played one at length or alone in a room though to compare. I would love to do a back by back comparison of both if ever possible. Of course my findings would be documented on this board.

FWIW, while I thought the MW 14 I played at the 2009 Midwest was just terrible , the one I played the next year rocked and had a very good low register. G was very sharp (and I didn't figure out how to get enough pull), fake Gb wasn't too hot, but Db to Ab-ish was great; just like a nice euph down a 4th.

Not really. I was looking for answers to very specific questions. Tubenet isn't very good at staying on topic.

Most folks will be excessively polite in a public posting, but more honest in a private messages.

Lots of folks seem to think discussing intonation in public is taboo. In private, not so much.
