If you haven't yet caught this fine quintet, please do yourself a great favor and do so! They are from all over the country, but play a lot here in the Philadelphia area. I was able to catch them---free--- in the Atrium of the Kimmel Center, home of the Philadephia Orchestra, as a warm-up for an Orchestra concert this past Friday night. A real pity only about 50 people stopped by. They are truly educational, performing on Renaissance-period instruments, Sackbuts, a full Saxhorn consort, and over-the-shoulder, as well as modern-day instruments, as the music requires. Superbly, I might add, even on 150 year old instruments, well in tune and beautiful blend and balance. They instruct the audience while not lecturing, keeping it light yet very informative and entertaining. The tubist and founding member, Jay Krush, is also the organizer/conductor of the Philadelphia TubaChristmas. These are seriously talented musicians, yet don't seem to receive the acclaim of similar quintets around the country. Try to hear them live, or, failing that, get one of their recordings and enjoy.

The trombonist, Larry Zimmerman, gets a truly beautiful sound but don't they all? I just mention him because I often hear him play in local orchestras.

Yes, they are an excellent group. I have one of their CDs. I knew tubist (formerly tubaist; don't get me started) Jay Krush at Eastman years ago. Not only a fine player, but a very talented satirical cartoonist, in the mold of Gerard Hoffnung.
