Bassoon players like a well defined overtone cluster.

So much that they have about 225 such clusters themselves.

The tone rings are fun but one word of caution. On the early 2165s they interfered big-time with the pitch and ability to center top-line Ab. One of the big reasons they quit doing it. I played a number of 2165s with the ring in before and after it was removed and every horn improved on this note. I think the ring was at a node.

HI-
FWIW, those 'rings' in the 2165's in the beginning added $800 to the cost of the horn!
