Oh my, UPS.....

I have used UPS here in the KC area for a decade, and they have been AWESOME!!! The St. Joseph guys are high class.

Insert 'but' here.... :D :D

I will try and upload some pics soon, but I purchased a horn this week I was really excited for. It was a suspicious auction, but I took a chance. More than not I have come out on the good side of these. An older MW that needed some TLC, but at a good price.

Money was sent, and I had a tracking # in just 48 hours. Yeah, not a scam!!!!

Insert 'but' here......

UPS allowed this horn to be delivered.....

wrapped in a blanket....

One layer of cardboard forced around it....

Lots of tape.....

and two fragile stickers.....

lets just say, smushy valves.....Bent bell......third slide tube 70% smushed.....

Fixable, but not gonna be cheap......if I get the refund I ask for, it may cover most of the repairs....

Oh yeah.....

I paid $200 for shipment......

I don't blame the seller as much as UPS for even DREAMING of sending this horn.....

and the claims begin!

woohoo!!!!!

 i just dont get though why some sellers think a FREAKIN TUBA will arrive safely, poorly protected (or not at all). My little york arrived in a franken tape box with no protection. It was free of major dents before it shipped and when i got it, it had a crinkly bell and a severely dented bottom bow

yup, if that thing was shipped from a "UPS Store" (aka mailboxes etc.) chances are your seller had to sign a form saying he packed it himself and waiving all potential claims against damage.

Good luck in any case, I'm sure it'll be a fine horn once it's made playable again.

I hope the blanket at least kept the tuba warm.

All things considered, that Tuba arrived in pretty good shape. I have seen Tubas that have been packed very well received with far worse damage.

Now, dealing with UPS on a daily basis I must take this opportunity to say that having shipped many Sousaphones and Tubas all over the place, I haven't had a single problem with them. The problem I have had is with the seller packing the item.

That being said, if you wrap a Sousaphone case with shrink wrap, UPS will take it.

Again, UPS has always been a good shipper for me and the silver lining is that the Tuba is in pretty decent condition being shipped the way it was.

You wonder why the country is in such a state and then you see a guy ship a tuba like this and it all becomes (whaaaaaa) so clear.

Even a pack job that crappy might have still survived a trip on a Greyhound bus.

The only way I'll ship a tuba via FEDEX, UPS, USPS, or any other commercial shipper is if the buyer is willing to pay for the double-oversized packing or wooden crate/shipping skid.... plus insurance cost and my time and materials.

Bloke's right about shipping a tuba in a case.... the heavier the package, the better the chance a common carrier will damage it.

On the other hand.... I've shipped DOZENS of tubas in cases via Greyhound with no problems.

Dan introduced me to Greyhound shipping, and I cannot praise them enough!

I guess it's about time for someone to post a claim about a damaged Greyhound shipment. I hope it's not me! I'm expecting a large tuba to come in today.

Well, I'm not sure what UPS is going to do, but the seller gave me a 60% refund, and with the stimate for repair, I will only come out $200 on the wrong side. I think I will still get a deal considering the cost to begin with.

Had this not been a 70's MW 20, I'm sure it would have taken a worse beating. This horn is a horse!!!!!

I picked the horn up around 6pm and took it directly to a gig. I also had another horn with me... just in case. but, did manage to use the Cerveny for two sets.

Nice pack job. It took three days instead of the estimated one day but that can be expected during periods of heavy passenger loading (spring break). Greyhound is still batting 1000 with me! :tuba:

I picked a horn up from greyhound today in perfect condition. That makes 3 for 3, all perfectly fine. None took longer than 5 days, and for only $80! I'm a lifelong customer!

They messed up the one thing I sent via Greyhound, if that's what you mean. From the recipients' account, it sounded like a fairly brutal impact. I don't recall whether a claim was filed, though.
