Going to San Diego for a convention and curious other people's success stories with traveling on planes with their euphonium; either carrying it on the plane or a beastly case that could withstand the battering of the grunts who handle the luggage.
Success stories?

I always carry it with me. I was advised by Steven Mead that he uses a Cronkhite gig bag, so I bought one as well. Been across country on Southwest (no prob) and across the pond on British Air (also no prob). The gig bag will NOT fit in a commuter plane. The standard case is not great for "checked baggage" and the indestructo heavy cases are impossible to lug around when doing lots of walking through London.

Southwest uses all 737s and their overhead storage units are big enough to store a euphonium in a Cronkhite gig bag. You may get a few weird looks and you might have to shove the euphonium up in there, but it's a lot safer up there than it is under the plane. I've heard too many horror stories, so I make sure I always fly Southwest. And they still have complementary refreshments!
