Did these horns come with an oversized receiver?

A friend has one of these horns and it swallows everything I have whole- I don't have any Euro shank mouthpieces on hand, but I suspect it would be too big for those too.

His current solution involves some sort of stainless metal tape- it seals but the shank is still sitting in too far.

It could very well be the receiver was damaged/stretched sometime between 1910 and now.

Any thoughts?

Yes, I had a York monster sousaphone that came with original bits. They took a mouthpiece shank that was much larger than any standard shanks. The machinist at Dillon Music made an adapter so that I could use "normal" mouthpieces with it. I understand that it is about the same size as old Alexander receivers.

I'd suggest you use scotch tape (transparant??) on the shank to fill it up.

Sam Burtis (free lance NY trombonist) uses electrical tape (thin) on all his mouthpieces. He first turns the shank down so the mpc will go in completely and then fill's it up with tape constantly checking the horn's intonation and feel a certain depth's trying to find the sweet spot....

I'm trying it now with my Miraphone 186 BB. I found it is incredibly sensitive to mpc depth and a few millimeters make a whole of a lot of difference....

The York receivers are somewhat oversized. A Euro-shank mouthpiece should work just fine (it does for me). You might try a bit of heat shrink tubing on the shank of your mouthpiece.
