So currently I am playing on a PT-6 rotor (formerly owned by Josh Wirt) with a Laskey 30 G Euro Shank mouthpiece. I feel the mouthpiece is sticking too far out of the lead pipe, which is easily solvable by getting a thinner shank mouthpiece

But what are mouthpiece characteristics that go well with a rotor horn versus a mouthpiece that goes well with a piston horn? The PT-6 I have is very free blowing. I'm just a student heading off for college next semester so I have a LOT to learn about tubas. Also, I am new to the TubeNet community so any help with orientation would be fantastic!

From what I've heard (and this could be completely off), the PT-6 was designed with the PT-50 mouthpiece. I do not play the PT-6 myself, but my teacher and the other students in the studio at my school all play (or have played) either the PT6 rotary or PT6P.




So for whatever it's worth, the PT50 might not be a bad place to start.

I started with a Pt-50, but I then moved on to a Pt-88 on my Pt 6 rotar, great for that extra depth in the low register. Try both and see what you like. My preference in an 88 which is what i now use on my 6/4 CC

I'd say try a PT-50. I was in pretty much the same boat--playing a PT-6 with a Laskey 30H and not very pleased with the result. I switched to the PT-50 and it worked much better. After a couple of months I tried a PT-50+ with the horn, and it worked even better. To be perfectly honest, I think the PT-88 is just too big, unless you are one of the players who can handle a bucket for a mouthpiece. The PT-50 is big, too, but to me it seems much more manageable.

I think the Laskey 30G (A shank) is perfect for the PT-6!

It is as much what mouthpiece pairs with you as with the tuba. What one person finds great with PT-6 may not work for you as we all have different shaped faces. If you can try as many mouthpieces as you can in store, or try friend's ones to see what works for you, that is the best approach. Otherwise it is possible to waste lots of money switching and changing to find the right fit.

I am currently using a MF 'H' on my Neptune and cannot see why that would not also work with PT-6, but just bring up as another one to try.
