plastic shields

Hey all,
I attended the Boston Symphony Orchestra concert tonight (which was fantastic, in case you were wondering), and the brass section members had these weird plastic-looking shields behind each player. I'm not sure what they were...does anyone have any ideas? (if this is a stupid question, sorry...and no, it wasn't just the horn players)

Yup. Those 'blast panels' are normally found IN FRONT of the trumpets and trombones.

behind the brass. Percussion at ear level can give ya tinnitus (and you thought the whining strings were bad!)

ON THE OTHER HAND, in a former life, when a substitute tympanist displayed particular vigor a few inches form my head, I was know to place a few quarters on the drums under the music stand between the drums. After a puzzled silence, they usually got the message...
