If anyone has ever read Arban's intro to his method, you'll discover he learned articulation from FLUTE PLAYERS! In the Fall 2010 FLUTE QUARTERLY there is a great explanation of FRENCH pronunciation. Your flute friend who is a member can send you the entire issue as a PDF. Ligner completes the explanation as the is NO LANGUAGE that uses the flute/Arban K to speak;-)

While taking Flute Methods at DePaul, we learned from a lady who studied flute performance at The Paris Conservatory. Her pronunciation of "tu" was so focused and stylish! I incorporated it into my tuba playing immediately. I often speak of this in my lessons and remind myself when I play.

In college, an attempt to get friendly with a flute player derailed my planned studies. One semester I signed up for two courses that she was taking instead of two courses with my best friend, which pushed me off sequence for one of my majors and I never go back on track, finishing with a minor in that subject. And I didn't get the girl.

Ah, the wonders of feminine forbearance.
We've noted in the past how frequently tuba players and flute players end up in each other's company. I don't think it's because of how the French pronounce "tu", but I do suspect some other French stuff is involved.
