Tuba Maintenance Videos - Jeff Funderburk

Post by dwerden »

Jeff Funderburk has posted 14 free videos on tuba maintenance. I have them all collected here (along with the video of Jeff's performance of the Broughton Sonata):

Very useful! (Even euphonium players who play on piston valves can find interesting material in a couple of them: "Slide Lubrication" and "Caring for the Finish.")

Here are the topics covered:

Tuba Repair #1 Basic Repair Tools
Tuba Repair #2 Rotary Valve Parts
Tuba Repair #3 Rotary Valve Linkages
Tuba Repair #4 Rotary Valve Lubrication
Tuba Repair #5 Slide Lubrication
Tuba Repair #6 Caring for the Finish
Tuba Repair #7 Stuck Slides
Tuba Repair #8 Sluggish Rotary Valves
Tuba Repair #9 Noisy Valves
Tuba Repair #10 Bumper Replacement
Tuba Repair #11 Valve Tolerances
Tuba Repair #12 Rotary Valve Removal
Tuba Repair #13 Rotary Valve Cleaning
Tuba Repair #14 Rotary Valve Reassembly

We owe Jeff a big Thank-You for making these resources available!

I actually contacted Dr. Funderburk sometime last year regarding these videos. Here's what he had to say, for those interested:
Jeff Funderburk wrote:I think it was 1988 or 1989 that we did the original taping. We used a Meinl Weston model 30 that the school owned for the demonstrations. It was coated in a film of soap to help keep down the reflections for the cameras. The video was produced in cooperation with the Radio/TV department and served as the final masters project for 5 Radio/TV graduate students. They spent 300 hours editing the various closeups into the final video.
The videos are pretty useful for those of us with rotary valve tubas. I still don't feel comfortable with some of the stuff he details, though (muriatic acid, blowtorch  ) and take my horn to a tech.

Nice video of the Broughton, too.

Thanks for adding that background on the videos. It's always fun to know how these things come to be.
