Hi,I'm still a greenhorn and i hope i could have some pointers from more experienced players.
I have a Yamaha YBB-641, and am looking to purchase a gig bag. It's measurements are roughly 19.5" for the bell and 40" for the length (IF i am not wrong) . .

Do i Purchase a gig bag that is Bigger than it, like say 20" x 41" or even a 20.5" x 43" ?
Or do i purchase a very tight fit like a 19.5" x 39" ?

Do advise. .


Also, does anyone has a Humes & Berg Tux gig bag? The one that fits up to 21" bell, what is it's height?

Also, who has Gard Cordura / Gard Mid-Suspension bags? Any comments about them and the H&B tux bag?

I have a Cronkite bag for my King and it is super. They are also not cheap. I have had a Pro Tech bag for the last 13 years and it is still going strong.Cronkite makes the best bag but if cost is a consideration Pro Tech will do the job very well. I carried mine about a half mile a day with and old style King in it for 11 of the 13 years. Ed

One thing to consider is the pocket for your music folder. Many gig bags have it on the front, over the valves, which is a very stupid place to put it. With the pocket on the back side your folder does not get bent, so your charts dont get chewed up.

It is possible (and worthwhile) to sew on your own pocket and zipper, but it takes some time.

As others have pointed out, the purpose of a gig bag is not so much to protect the tuba (it doesn't) but rather to make your tuba easier to carry around. With that in mind I look for a bag that fits snugly and is fairly light, but has good straps.

As noted abvove, double check your measurements before ordering anything, otherwise you will wind up with something about the size of a sleeping bag and it will be a pain to work with.

Hmm, no one has measurements of the height of Humes & Berg / Gard bags?

I heard Pro-tec bags aren't that good in general though. . Was your's the Deluxe version or the normal one? (if there is a difference in durability)

So with that, Fit snugly as in just right?

Cause since my 641 is 16.5" x 40" , it's kinda a freak size. So if i were to get a 20" x 41" , would it be okay? If it's too loose, will it be irritating overtime?

Not to beat a dead horse, but Cronkhite really is the way to go. No one else in the business knows gig bags he way he does, has been hand making them for longer, or has a virtually custom bag for your horn. Yes, his work is not the least expensive out there, but the replacing another bag when it breaks or repairing your horn when the bag doesn't do it job right is going to be more costly than investing in a super high quality bag for your instrument.
