Nice job! Makes me want to get a sousaphone or helicon....or both!... or two of each!! Yeah, that's the ticket!

I'd like to get a skull and cross bones cover so I can use my tuba as a fog horn/jolly rodger combo when I'm on the boat during those foggy early mornings. Heck, the tuba may even attract fish.

Helicons are not reported to be as vulnerable to bell ringing as sousaphones. The distance from the rim to the body ferrule is shorter than that from a sousaphone from its rim to the ferrule of the body knee (at least if measured along the edge of the bell and knees). The comparative distance from bell rim to the first main stay is also smaller for the helicon. The sousaphone problem aside from the points of view in the thread referred to are about a fairly big mechanical entity being left on its own without external support.

The reason for Schleppy’s cover design and production more is about him being fairly tall and old for the playful little boy he really is. And his bell after all is down in a height where the parade horses may want looking for water in the apparent tub if left uncovered.

Karyn has made several bell covers. The one on the left is all spandex, white, that she colored and put our logo on by hand. The one on the right is a heavier material; the yellow is spandex, which eases the muffle of sound a bit. I have to dig in the archives for the other ones she's made. I have an order in for a patriotic pair for the 4th of July parade.

I am beyond any marching and certainly beyond march my heavy Conn sousaphones, yet I have some ideas, which may not be very original:

If the purpose is dampening of the rim area’s independent acoustic life, then the aquarium air hose slid open may be a solution. An alternative could be an oversize garter out of heavy and soft fabric with strong elastic bands along both edges. Opens for decorative effects without interfering too much with the sounding air column.

If the purpose is the above acoustic one plus the prevention of the abuse of the bell as an involuntary waste bin, then the garter could be combined with a full screen out of a much lighter and much more openly woven fabric.
