Hello all,

I would like to know if anyone has played or had any experience with this horn. I tried one for about 10 minutes and I have to say I am impressed. I would just like a second opinion.

*5/4 update my bad

Kanstul's website lists it as a 5/4 and from the pics I'd agree with that assessment. The bottom bow is too narrow to be called a 6/4 IMHO. I have to admit, I do not like the bell seam. I have a hangup about having to like the looks as well as how it plays before I'd own it. So that would take it out of consideration for me. Yes I realize it is a silly thing that could cause me to miss out on some great instruments. It is what it is.

I've had a 9004B MK2 for about four years before upgrading to the Kanstul 33-S the tune any note feature is wonderful - a secondary main tuning slide throw for your thumb. The Monster pull on the 4th valve was fun to play with! ( 12 inch pull! ) Its a good horn that gets that 5/4 sound without beating you up! My Nephew now has the instrument and he enjoys it too.
The old Mark1 9004B is now fitted with a detachable copper bell (20") and a fitted (duct tape!) Conn 20J bell for Jazz use.
Nice tuba, great for Brass Band use.

Oh yes, about that seam in the bell -- in those days the buffing stations could only handle trumpets and baritones and small 3/4 tubas. So the only solution at the time was to chop the bells of the 5/4 bells to clear the walls, hence the seam. The mark 1 tubas had detachable bells for that same reason. A new booth has been constructed since hopefully to acomodate the new 5/4 coming out.
