I think most good players can outbuzz the tubas resonance, at least on contrabass. The RM BBb I played in college would lose sonority progressively after Ab, just above the third ledger line. However, it is subjective what one calls musical (as is the perception of one's own talent/facility, i.e. perhaps it was my limitation).

I peter out way before that now, lucky to squeak out an F that doesn't sound like a mewling, constipated calf.
