Check it out...

Paul Mergen is the tuba soloist tonight and tomorrow night with the U.S. Marine Band as we kick off the Summer Concert Series. Paul is playing James Barnes' "Yorkshire Ballad" and Vince Youmans' "Carioca". Tonight's concert is at 8:00 pm (2000 hours) on the west staircase of the U. S. Capitol. Tomorrow night's concert (June 2) is at 8:00 pm at the Sylvan Theater on the grounds of the Washington Monument.

Next week, I'm bringing the helicon out for the U.S. Marine Dixieland Band for our summer concerts. The June 8 concert is at 8:00 pm on the Capitol steps, June 9 is 8:00 pm at the Sylvan Theater. Ryan McGeorge is ditching the euphonium and pulling out his valve bone for these concerts.

All of these concerts are outdoors, and subject to weather conditions. The National Park Service, who operates these sites, has, on occasion, cancelled our performances because of an overly high heat index. Hopefully, this won't happen.

In addition, the U.S. Marine Brass Ensemble is heading south to Danville, KY for this year's Great American Brass Band Festival. We're performing Saturday evening, June 11, at 8:00 pm on the Main Stage at Centre College, and at 2:00 pm on Sunday, June 12, also on the Main Stage. We're really looking forward to being a part of this incredible event. I'll be soloing on Vince Youmans' "Carioca" on one or both of these concerts. The fearless leaders, John Cradler on tuba, and Phil Franke on euphonium, will both be in the group as well.

Come on out and see us, and make sure to come by and say hello if you have the chance. It's going to be a busy couple of weeks!

I think I just figured out when this summer to take my son to visit Centre, my wife's alma mater.
