I try making low brass pitch reference drones available for free. My drones are based on MIDI sound, which only can be made loud to a certain limit. I have converted the MIDI files to MP3, by means of iTunes, as an alternative, but I want them louder also.

It can be done in Audacity, but the format changes to something only readable in Audacity. And one mp3 file suddenly becomes a whole folder of Audacity sound data. Not practical.

Alternatives beyond buying a full-blown sound studio?

In Audacity, instead of saving it, click Export. That allows saving as a wav or mp3 file.

Klaus.... you can export Audacity files as mp3 files after you alter them. Don't just do a 'save'. There is an export function in the same pull-down menu.

I am using Audacity 1.3 beta and I'm pretty sure exports to mp3 without doing all that stuff you used to have to do.
