Hey guys/gals

I'm currently at the Army SOM and for my double I got issued a Willson 2900 with the Euro shank. I got a 51D to go along with it but my tuba chops prefer something bigger. What is out there in the euro shank? I really prefer a super flat and sharp rim (my tuba piece is the Blokepiece with the Large Helleberg rim). What mouthpiece am I looking for?

Just did a quick check -- it looks like Schilke makes everything up to the 60 in medium shank, and Denis Wick has the SM2 through SM4 likewise. Not sure how the rim contours are on those compared with the Helleberg rim, but the diameter sounds more workable. HTH ...

The original poster isn't going to be able to have an instrument issued to him at the SOM(School of Music) modified.

I would suggest that he just learn to live with it. It's silly to buy a new mouthpiece to use on a horn that you will likely only use for 10 weeks.

It's possible. Ask the repair shop guys if they have a receiver and explain the issue. It seems like most of the staff there are low brass guys.

Perhaps the Wick SM2M? I have a 3M but would have gotten the 2M if it'd been available when I was shopping.

You would be comfortable with anything in my EUPH series, or some of the various bass trombone and contrabass trombone pieces I make. I even make cups in the TU series that are shallow enough to really work on euphonium with a tuba rim. And I have Euro euph shanks. AND I have Helleberg style rims.

Have you played euph before? If you're primarily a tuba player and the Army wants you to play a little euph now and then there's nothing wrong with using a large bass trombone-sized mouthpiece (or even larger). Finding something like this with a euro shank will be difficult, you're best bet in this case would be to contact Doug Elliott - see above. If you're serious about euph (and if the Army wants you to be serious about euph) then I highly recommend a large euphonium mouthpiece in the Wick SM3 size range, anything larger than 27.00 mm or so might make it difficult for a doubler to acheive a true euphonium sound without a LOT of face time.

Not sure, but I think since the deconsolidation the Army is outsourcing repairs, and not using the Navy/Marine Corps shop on the third deck. There have been a lot of changes since two summer ago!

p.s. if you're interested in trying a large diameter, deep cup, flat rim euro shank euph mouthpiece, just stop by room 1B20 sometime between 1000 and 1430 next Thursday and introduce yourself.

Thanks all for the replies. I ended up getting an SM3M from Hornguys since they had it in stock and have already put it in the mail.
