I'm doing a limited run of the Deck mouthpieces I made, way back when in the 90's, only this time in stainless steel. I've had several requests for different rim sizes, so two larger rim I.D.'s will be offered. 33.2mm and 33.5mm- both maintaining the contour of the 32.6mm original.

IMPORTANT UPDATE/CORRECTION: I discovered an error in my description or the #2 Deck- as Murphy's Law would have it the options and descriptions of the #1 and #3 had to be modified slightly. Please revisit the web site to see the corrections.

Will these have screw rims? It would be kool if the rims were interchangeable with the other neat stuff you make.

You really outdid yourself on the information you posted on the website! I thought knew a lot about these from owning two of them, but I learned a lot from looking at the info you posted on your site! Thanks for being so thorough!

I thought about doing the Decks with screw rims since that seems to be my schtick in this biz. (Hmm- never spelled schtick before). But making it interchangeable with the other rims I offer would clash with the beefy exterior lines of the Deck. It'd be easier to make the piece with the specific rim contour as a 1 piece. (might have to add that option)

Of course if screw rims could be made to just to blend with the Deck profile--they'd be the size of furniture dolly wheels.

I'm curious how these mouthpieces compare to a Parke Offenloch.

I'm playing this (#3F) in an Olds 99 (!) while waiting for ships from China to come in and another interesting (European) possibility to either work out or not. If I'm still playing that Olds when the community band season starts back up, I won't be ashamed as long as I can do it with this mouthpiece.

There's been a lot of discussion on TN about the player or the horn making the marginal difference in the sound, but I'm thinking the mouthpiece is an underrated part of the equation. This little Jr. High tuba gives out an amazingly alive sound (both in my lap and recorded from across the room) with this mouthpiece in it.

I couldn't be any more pleased.

9.52. Not really the right one for the Olds, probably. But it will be best with the tubas I'm looking forward to, I think.

I'll start by saying; I think that most popular mouthpieces in use today are WAY too big.
Secondly, I believe that KIDS should use kid sized mouth pieces.

Edit: I realized I hadn't explained why I think what I said. What happens when your rim is too big for your face is
it covers and impinges on the corners or your embrasure, effectively pinning your lips to one position.
If that's true, then you should always be able to see the corners of a player’s mouth.
Just another wild idea of mine I guess.................

I'm 47 years old. And the ID of this mouthpiece is on the small side (32.6mm). About 1/4" of my mouth is visible on either side of the OD.



EDIT: And advertising doesn't come into it, BTW. Dave made it quite clear in several threads including this one that this was a limited run.

All I was remarking on (via the picture) was that 9-something millimeters (for a tuba mouthpipe throat) is quite large...kind-of Conn Chief-ish.

How does this compare to the throat on the Symphony underparts, then, Bloke? (No doubt I could look it up, but that kind of data isn't the sort of thing I keep in my head. If I looked it up, I would forget again momentarily.)

I have bought and sold a bunch of mouthpieces these few years, but that is the one mouthpiece I have kept through thick and thin. (Even a solo came and went.) The Symphony is absolutely dependable for me, and whatever else I take, I always take it to performances. Other mouthpieces have been interesting, and some have been better for certain situations. But when I feel the mouthpiece will make the difference between a good contribution and a mediocre one (or worse), I use it and have never been sorry.

(Whoops, I hope this isn't advertising for Bloke. Just running my mouth...)

Wow was I ever wrong
When I heard Warren Deck's name mentioned, I jumped to the wrong conclusion.
I made an assumption as to rim size and guessed wrong.
I got out the calipers and checked out 32.6mm and got a real surprise.
Thanks for setting me straight !
I still believe that most modern mouth pieces are too large in the rim, but definitely not this one.

Should've hung onto mine for the sheer novelty. I sold mine to someone on this forum who flipped it on eBay a few weeks later. Nothing wrong with that, I suppose. If you see a stainless steel one with serial # 11, let me know.

I really wanted to like them, and kept trying for a while. I pre-bought one of the stainless steel ones (#5), sold it, bought another one, sold it. Maybe did that a third time. It just seems intuitively like a better idea than the reality turned out to be for me. I did much the same with Monettes earlier.

Not to dovetail into another topic too badly, but as a performance major in a competitive school environment, my use of the Deck 3F coincided with growing fears I might have F.D.

After a while of fretting over shaky attacks and unstable tone, I switched back to a more moderate sized mouthpiece and the symptoms abated.

I'm sure the Deck has its proponents, as well - I would buy mine back, no question. But it is very large.
