I'm glad to see this lecture clip up on YouTube. This is a really nice story with a really nice message. Really wild stuff and very inspiring.

I've been listening to this album for a while since I found it posted on the tube. Matteson was playing great jazz on that old helicon. I think he made around 3 or 4 more albums playing dixie stuff on helicon, maybe one with Bob Scobey and a few other groups, I'd really like to find those. I would even buy them if it were possible!

He was playing some funky, swinging sounding stuff that was really different from what the Dukes had done before, amazingly it works pretty darn well with Papa Jack playing four down beats to the measure on banjo. I think the drummer and Rich mesh together pretty well on these Dukes recordings, I especially like the way he backs up Rich on his solos.

I haven't heard anyone approach the dixie style like this on tuba and be so darned good at it. I need to get a mp3 or mp4 player and load it with Rich Matteson playing helicon so I can listen to it at the gym, while everyone else listens to lady Gaga and the latest.

This is a pretty old thread that I ran into while looking for something else, but the quoted talk from Rich Matteson is worth a bump. Simple but profound stuff, and fun to listen to him recollecting about recording with Louis Armstrong.
