The one exception I've found to the image you've posted is the receiver on the German made Bessons.

They feature the same sleeve that fits over the end of the leadpipe BUT there is a noticeable step where the leadpipe takes over.

It is possible to machine a 'venturi' to smooth over the step into the leadpipe. Basically a little widget that sits in the end of the leadpipe and smooths the transition. I'll leave it to others to decide if that improves how the horn responds.

Looks like there is a substantial difference in the backbores. Is that the same mouthpiece?

Sure wish the manufacturers would get their s**t together and standardize their stuff!

Are the stems taped? How much much difference does that for the depth of the Insertion?

I didn't mean to imply that YOU were part of the cause of the current mouthpiece woes. One guy can't fix it. This thing has been going to hell ever since anyone began making brass instruments. Matt Walters gave it a shot with his AGR... which I think was a most noble attempt at bringing The World together and offering a reasonable explanation of mouthpiece dynamics.

Even if a person always used a standard shank in a standard receiver.... there is still too much tolerance to assure a consistent match-up between mouthpiece and horn.

I've been tempted to fabricate a straight receiver with a pinch screw (like a sousaphone neck receiver) and turn a straight shank on my mouthpieces. A tune-able mouthpiece?? Tell me why it wouldn't work.
