I have decided to take recordings of myself playing tuba and post them on youtube so I can actually watch myself grow!

That was very good. Now play the even harder part of Jupiter, 8 measures before 17 until 8 measures after 17.

Alright, I recorded it after I got home! It's pretty late, but it should be good!

Here is my advice.

1. Play these about a quarter of the actual tempo.

2. Think about where each note is going and how it is going to get there.

3. Once you get the idea in your head, the challenge is to make it phyically happen. If you can't hear it in the recording then chances are it is not happening out front.

3. Slowly build the temo up, when you increase the tempo do not change the musical approach of how you are moving from one note to the next.

4. Always use a tuner and a metronome. These are your tools for keeping yourself honest. When you practice, the metronome should be on from start to finish.

When playing keep the following in mind.

1 Big fat beautiful sound.
2 Perfect rhythm
3 Perfect intonation
4 Play Musical, in the style of the piece
5 Watch the articulation and dynamics.

Always remember, its not a bunch of tuba players listening to your audition. Those on the commitee are listening to the 5 points listed above.

Good luck and keep them coming.

Thanks the advice Tom! I really started this with the idea of letting my family know how I was/am doing tuba. But I knew you guys would have some ideas!

Do you have Pokorny's orchestral excerpts CD? If not, buy it and listen to how he playes the Jupiter excerpts and especially the tempo and dynamics at 17.
