Hi,

I'm searching for a cheap opportunity to ship a small tuba (YBB-621) with case from US
to Germany. Anyone has experiences in this bussiness or know a honest shipping company
with normal costs?? I am a poor student.....

BAX Global seems to be the preferred method of commercial shipping. I've sent items FEDEX but any way you go... the cost is going to be more than several hundred bucks.

BAX Global has gotten pretty 'picky' and without a commercial account... they may not work with you.

BAX Global would be the way to go if you can. They seem to be the most competitively priced shipper when compared to others, in my opinion.

Either way, between building a box, packing materials and shipping costs, this isn't going to be a cheap endeavor.

I just sent a 25-J with two bells to Germany. I will have to check for the carrier's name when I get to my desk, but it could well have been BAX...
Anyway, my client spent over $800.00, AFTER I saved him $150.00 by dropping the boxes off, instead of having them picked up! He was billed for a cubic meter. I managed to re-purpose an appliance box to hold both bells, so there were just two boxes. Anytime you ship a two-peice horn overseas, you should make an effort to get it in one box if possible, as the customs folks at the destination may mess with your client! Dan Oberloh related a story about a client who finally had to open the boxes in front of the customs Nazis to demonstrate that he only had one Tuba Another peice of advice Dan had was to be sure you have handles or straps of some kind for the package handlers' convenience. When I send an instrument in just a case, I shrink wrap or tape a plastic bag over it, and cut out for any wheels and/or handles! The handlers will hopefully treat your package better, and your package is not likely to be opened by Curious George or any other Chimps...

Bax Global is now owned by DB Schenker, where DB is Deutsche Bahn.

When Bax was on its own. It was the only company willing to insure musical instruments up to their value. I guess they still do. I have used them at least once since the change to Schenker and had no problems, as I didn’t while they were on their own.

They are not exactly cheap, but you can cut costs by delivering and fetching at one of their hubs.
