I have no experience with such things and need some advice as to what to buy; during my collegiate audition process I borrowed one from the band director but failed to write the name of it down. Looking for something small I could put on the stand or piano in a practice room when I play. Thanks

+3 on the Zoom H2. The Zoom H4n is also very good. It cost more and does more but may be more than you need.

I bought one a couple years ago, unpacked it, and promptly put it on the shelf without trying to learn how to use it. My ancient eyes can barely read music print, much less the very small print on the Zoom-H2. If anyone wants to buy my virtually brand new Zoom-H2, send me a PM. Another thumbs up for the H2. A handy feature is that it runs on a pair of non-proprietary AA batteries.

And get the silicone jacket too. Not exactly industrial strength protection, but better than nothing and will make it less likely to slide off your stand.

I have been using the Zoom H2 for the last 3 years to record my concerns and am still amazed at how good quality recording such a small thing produces.

iPad + camera connection kit + powered USB hub + Blue Microphones Yeti = audio gold. Great videos and audio tracks.

With your iPad setup for audio/video recording, are you using a separate camera connected to your iPad or do you have an iPad2 with the camera built in?

I use the camera on the iPad for video.

I have used the Rekord M from ESI-Audio for a year now. It will never produce a spectacular recording, but does a very decent job. I especially bought it because of the extremely small size. Very easy to use and surprisingly long battery life.

I think the zoom H2 can be a great product.

But... If you have a Laptop already you should REALLY consider getting a mic for it.

First of all it is cheaper to just get a mic. I got an MXL mic 2 or 3 years ago off of WWBW for about 100$

Secondly, you will probably buy a laptop for school anyway.

Thirdly, you can store more recording clips on a Laptop than on a Zoom. And you can sync your recording to your iPod/iPhone/ Mp3 player so that you can listen to them in more portable settings (in the Bus, While driving the car, while walking around...etc)

Lastly, your can record video with it. Like with the iPad you can record sound and video on a laptop, except the gear and scessories for the laptop are cheaper....

I like my Tascam DR-07. I've had it a couple years and use it for recording tuba solos and brass ensembles. I am happy with the way it works and the recorded sound. I think it cost around $250 new.

I'd spring for the Zoom H4. The mics are mediocre (they are on the H2, too) but later, when you've saved some more bucks, you can buy a pair of high-quality condenser mics for it that will make a huge difference (if, as in the case with all "instruments", they are handled properly). Meanwhile, it's nice, portable, and even lets you 4-track to a certain extent.
