Greetings:

I am planning a trip overseas next year, with my tuba. Since I don't have a case, I am researching flight cases. I see a lot of references to the Walt Johnson cases. I envisioned those as being trunk-like, like an Anvil case, but getting a picture recently, I see that they look just like any ordinary case. Presumably there are some construction features with which I am not aware, but the picture doesn't show them.

BTW, size is not a major issue, as I will be traveling with an orchestra, with string basses, timp, etc.

Can anyone offer testimonials as to the protection they offer from airline baggage handlers? Pros and cons?

They're HEAVY, really solid cases. I got mine with my PT6P it was shipped just in the case. No box or packing materials and it showed up undamaged(except for a warning sticker UPS had to put on it for being over 70 lbs).

I have two Unitec 'Light' Flight cases. They work great. My f tuba in the case is right at 60 pounds, and my Baer in the case is 75 pounds. Depending on what horns you play, you may not have to pay overweight fees.

Are you aware that there is an Anvil/Calzone case office in Dallas (well, Carrollton, actually)?

They will build a custom case for you, to your specs, from the ground up. Since it's an actual Anvil/Calzone corporate location, all of the options and accessories are on hand and they have folks on staff to measure your instrument and advise you of the best materials for your intended application.

This may be cheaper and easier (since they are local) than trying to custom order something by mail or over the internet.
