I am a 4th year college student studying music education and looking to buy a Yamaha 642 Euphonium. I am looking to spend $4,000.00 or less, but if that's not possible I will understand and re-negotiate! I need my own horn and I would appreciate any help in finding one! Thanks

I don't know the seller at all, but there is one close to Milwakee for sale on ebay right now. You might want to contact them and see if you could try it out.

Since the seller has no feedback on eBay, I would be apprehensive about buying it sight unseen.

You might also want to keep an eye on Dwerden's Forum. There is usually more euphoniums and gear for sale on that forum than on this one.

Sometimes the additional cost of a name brand horn buys you peace of mind.

The Jin Bao clones are good value for the money (I've play-tested the Tuba MM, Tuba Exchange, Dillon, Schiller, and Eastman branded versions as well as one with a Jin Bao stamp), but, IMO, the long term durability and reliability of these stencil horns--particularly under the demands typically associated with undergrad and grad performance programs--remains an open question. While the demands of music ed majors on an instrument may not be as severe, durability and reliability nevertheless remain important considerations.

Additionally, none of the repair techs around here--excepting Mike Morse of Tuba Exchange (who works on TE stencils but not those of other vendors)--will touch Chinese-made stencil horns, whereas all of the techs will work on instruments from established brands. Until that changes, I would be very reluctant to recommend a stencil horn to someone who was not local to the vendor or to a repair tech who works on stencil horns. While one does have the option of shipping the horn back to the vendor for service, the costs--not just financial, but also in terms of the inconvenience, and loss of use while the horn is in transit--may not be trivial.

Which is fine IF you live near Memphis or in the Pacific Northwest, but seeing as the OP is located in/around central MI, it's not a certainty that he would have convenient access to a repair tech who DOES work on stencil horns, and the financial and opportunity costs of shipping a euph to either location for repair would not be trivial.

The best plan, though, is "Don't bust it", and - if someone plans to bust a baritone after buying it, maybe a '70's bell-front Olds would be a better choice.

I have so far only purchased one tuba from new and it was from a vendor who currently checks each tuba prior to dispatch and is also trying to improve on the quality of the production and also only sells those models that he feels are suitable for his market. I had such a positive experience that I have ordered another tuba from him so I dont know how things work in the US but here in Europe we have a sale of goods act (UK and Ireland has similar) that protects buyers very well and a warranty defect is a warranty defect and I would not expect to have pay anything to have a defect either repaired or replaced.
I was wary of buying a JinBao but once I had negotiated the terms and conditions and an easy google search of the vendor gave me the re assuarnce I needed to commit my money.

Your statement would be true of all the big volume online sellers no matter what brand you were buying and I would not buy from them.

If like me you are without a decent music shop nearby then do what I did, find as geographically close as you can get a small reseller that has in stock the instrument you want will negotiate terms and conditions with you, research both them and the instrument filter out all the biased reviews and then decide.
If at all possible play one before buying either at the sellers or look for one nearby ask on this forum maybe some one has one within reasonable distance you can try.
