Ponchielli's FLICORNOBASSO

Post by Amilcare »

In the process of providing access to Ponchielli's music for band, the Concerto per flicorno basso will soon be up. The main delay is a peculiar problem with MP3 files made from the same exact procedures not being recognized correctly by the WINDOZE player.

As in all of the solo pieces, an edited solo part is also available. Too many editions of these pieces relied on copies that have been since supplanted by autograph sources. The flicornobasso suffered mightily from this in that the autograph was (pre 2007) held by the museum while a copy was held by the library. The detail in the solo part was omitted, including several ossia. The result has been some serious mis-interpretations, especially in the THEME and VARIATIONS. The art of bel canto is one that must be studied assiduously in order to allow this piece to have its full effect.

Sadly, the playback lacks much of the expressiveness that is demanded by this piece. Also, the first version I did of this piece was from B&W photopositives. The new edition is based on digital images captured in 2001. Even at 3MB (the best available at the time), the detail in color images is incredible.

I have produced bass and contrabass tuba versions for ITEA PRESS. Try them out. Ponchielli's tuba section was highly paid, and the lack of a solo for one of the two principal players has now been fixed :D

I took the freedom of making your link active above here. It now leads to your site. Sadly the flicorno basso link there does not work.

I'm having problems with the MP3 files. Some are OK, but others have a jumbled codec :(

I will try again later

I look forward to vieweing the link(s) when they are up! In the meantime, your entire page is GREAT and bravo! for all of this. It's a realy treat to have this kind of scholarly info available on the Ponchielli materials. Having played the filccorno basso concerto several times, I always think to myself "Ponchielli must have had someone in mind when he wrote this". It's hard to imagine there could have been THAT many players who could have tackled such a work.

Matt

It's finally up. I don't know why, but the NAME I gave to the MP3 of the modern band edition caused all the problems. Please follow the link activated above. ANY TEXT in red is a link.

Enjoy;-)

Also look here:

The flicornobasso variation is harder than anything you've ever seen. There is a Marine Band live performance too. Phil Franke is the soloist.

If you don't know (of) him, he's one of the all-time best;-)
