I've been searching for a picture of Harvey Phillips playing sousaphone in one of the circus bands. I found one of him AND Johnny Evans playing sousas on Peter Rosa's 'Facebook' page. If you are a fan of circus music or just the circus life in general... you need to friend Peter and get access to his collection of well over 2,000 circus pictures... including 200 of just circus bands.

Johnny Evans is from down here in Winston-Salem. He also played in Sousa"band. Was introduced to Circus bands by Robert Mills, also old circus(trombone) player from Winston-Salem. In one of the old "TUBA" bullitins ,Harvey said Johnny was good mentor to him. The artical,(which was about Johnny) was written by Harvey. I gave my copy of this TUBA bellitin to Robert Clark, another Winston- Salem circus musician( a Tuba player).

You don't actually have to friend him to see the pictures - just go here.

Nice stuff!
(If you want more pictures of old bands - check out this huge collection.)

Aren’t we all wasting our time with tuba? These are so much more efficient:

Yup. I'm venturing a guess that the sousa Johnny Evans is playing is probably a Martin while the one Harvey Phillips is playing is a Conn model?? (pre-14K but with similar proportions).

I was hoping to find an image of Harvey Phillips playing a Conn 'Jumbo'!
