Yes, a Tornistertuba (German for back pack tuba). Its kind of tricky determining the pitch from the photos, but I tend to think this one is pitched in F.

These tenor, bass, and contrabass brasses have been discussed on TubeNet quite a bit recently. Possibly because this concept has been revived quite directly by at least one maker in Markneukirchen. And the acoustical proportions now also are seen in modern travel tubas from at least one German maker and one Chinese maker.

Long time lurker, first time poster. You can imagine my surprise after visiting the local band shop to find a picture of my tuba (and legs) on this forum. As good an introduction as any I suppose.

About this horn; it is awesome. Your guess was a good one, Klaus, it plays in E. Although, I wonder if it is old school high pitch E flat because it is a tad flat with the tuning slide all the way in. It has a clear centered tone which responds quickly. With the bell at ear level it makes my other horns sound muffled. As you can see in the picture I scabbed a trombone mouthpiece into it, however; since then my friend returned my double bell with Schilke 51D euro shank and It fits like a glove. Other than that, Thomas Prem at Cerveny sent me the same information that Mark (jonesmj) posted in other threads, so I won't repeat them here.

A very coincidental find. Just before my trip to the Czech Rep. I was doing some research into this instrument and then I go there and find one hanging in an antique store in Cesky Krumlov. What luck! I had to calm myself down and play it cool to negotiate the sale. With just a little cleaning and oiling it played. Unfortunately, the first and second slides are stuck, but I'll get to those eventually. Penetrox?

This Tornister sure lives up to its name. I was able to take it home packed in my suitcase and I tote it around in my backpack while traveling.

By the way, kathott, you might just get a chance to see it...

Congratulations - a terrific find. I believe it is a high pitch Eb as these horns tend to be HP. Enjoy your little guy!
