I'm looking for the old Fritz Reiner 5-disc set in which he conducts the CSO on numerous R. Strauss pieces, which includes both the '54 and '62 Also Sprach recordings. I'd like to buy it new, if there's any place that has them, but if not, used is fine (if someone has it and would sell it to me, send me a PM).

What I really want is the '54 Also Sprach recording, and I have found a CD that has that and Ein Heldenleben on it, and I will buy that if I can not get my hands on this, but I'd really prefer the affore-mentioned set.

The Reiner/CSO Pcitures (along with Night on Bald Mountain, Marche Slav, and some other well-played "Russian Showpieces") is available in most stores with a decent classical section. I know, for instance, that the Borders in Tallahassee usually has one or two in stock. If you have a Barnes and Noble or a Borders or something of the like up in MS you might be best served going out and saving yourself the cost of shipping (plus you get it right away, which is always a plus).

As far as Strauss, I would also recommend investigating the "Richard Strauss Concert" CD. It's a 2-disc set with Solti conducting CSO and Vienna and I think maybe one other orchestra. It has some really good readings of Heldenleben and Sprach, a pretty good Till (except that the orchestra gets lost for a couple bars) and some other stuff as well. And, for less than $20 when I bought it, it's hard to beat.

I already have two or three other recordings of Also Sprach, one of Solti and one of Karajan... I think the Solti has more "energy" than the Karajan but the orchestra just simply isn't together very well... the Karajan is much better as far as the performance, but it doesn't have as much energy... I don't care for either one a whole lot. However my dad has had the LP of the '54 Reiner recording of the piece since before I was born and I have heard it all my life. It's definitely my favorite recording that I've ever heard, and Reiner described it as the "performance of my life." That's why I want to get this particular one.

As far as Till Eulenspiegel, I have two or three recordings of it as well. I like my Karajan recording okay, but my favorite recording of that piece will always be Szell/Cleveland.

I have a very LIGHTLY used copy of the Pictures cd I'd be willing to part with. Played only 3 times. Still in like-new condition, will sell it to ya if you want for $7.
