High A flats in VW cadenza

Post by bentuba7 »

Where do you all like to put YOUR high A flats in the cadenza of the 1st mvt of the Vaughan Williams?
Or, what ornamentation/notes do you add?

I'm just curious to hear people's preferences :)

My preference? Don't play them. It seems like the amount of work required to get those suckers in tune, in time and in style isn't worth the result. Then again, that's just my opinion.

Ahhh ... that explains a lot. I'd wondered why "A flats" was plural. Sounds like someone's done to the VW what George Lucas has done (multiple times) to the Star Wars films. Glad I have the older edition.

I see a couple of errors in this, no?

There is a marked Gb in the first run up to the high F that I think is supposed to be a Bb.

And the descending offset triplets (the ones marked with staccato articulation) are not marked as triplets. We all know they are triplets because we've played it before, and being in groups of three implies it. But you know how literal some people can be.
