I know for a fact that Floyd is taking one student this year. He is either taking a grad student or a new freshman, but would prefer a freshman. I've had a couple lessons with him, and I can't complain at all!! He is an incredible teacher. Hopefully I'll see you at auditions!

I did my MM there from 07 to 09. It was pretty amazing. The program was fantastic, the energy and commitment of the students was extremely high. Studio class, in particular, was really something. I miss it.

Nothing needs to be said about studying with Floyd. He is a sage.

However, I seem to recall Floyd mentioning that he only took undergraduate students under special circumstances, and that the program was geared toward grad students. I may be mistaken or this may have changed. It would be worth asking somebody about this before flying out for an audition. If you do audition, I would recommend seeing the CSO, and possibly getting a lesson with any of the other legendary Chicago based tubists. May was well get the most out of it if you are flying out there.

Prof. Cooley is amazing. Winters are frigid. The basketball team isn't as good as it used to be.

Not being on the scene in Chicago my observations might be somewhat in error.

Floyd would be an amazing person to study with and you would be near the CSO and a number of other good teachers, performance groups for listening or participating. I think Rex Martin is at Northwestern - another top school, and DO look into Roosevelt uni as well. There are other state (Illinois) universities within at least driving range so that you could still gain the benefits Chicago has to offer. Be a good idea to contact Floyd, I'm sure Google would be your friend for locating him.

There is also our friend Brian Fredricksen (Windsong Press)who I know loves Uno's pizza and beer among other things.I plan to get to the US before long so I can go there and Berghoff's with him. ( I might have to get back on his "active customer " list for that - should be doing so soon.)

As for basketball, Go the Bulls and then of course you have the Bears, Cubs, and White Sox and that crew that go skating around on ice beating the absolute living C**p out of other people. I DON'T miss Chicago winters - or summers for that matter. But the musical scene would be great.

Hint: Get Brian to take you to Gino's East, about a mile north of Uno along the Magnificent Mile corridor. I don't normally like deep-dish pizza much, but Gino's made an argument in favor of it that was pretty persuasive (and more persuasive than Uno, in my opinion).

Why not, I don't think we ever resolved this ten years ago. Then again, I am getting a bit old for fighting. How about if we get a bunch delivered from a few of the best places, maybe a heap of different beers and and have a tuba, pizza and beer convention?

THEN we go to Berghoffs like a bunch of us did during Midwest '66.

Wouldn't be quite the same without Jake, BIll, Harvey, Rex, Oscar and all, but would be fun anyway. Think I'll have to get Brian to send me a couple e-pizzas again, despite the funny papery taste. Maybe if I fill an ink cartridge with some good past sauce, add extra garlic and oregano..............

Hey, Doc,

The more the merrier. Maybe you could bring a frozen Texas Barbeque Pizza and some Longhorn Lager.

Things change in Chicago. The main Gino's still has the best pizza in town but has moved - it is now at LaSalle and Ontario making it SOUTH of Uno's and Due's. There are a number of Gino's in the burbs with the same graet pizza but you don't have to wait an hour in the winter's cold. While Uno's is now a national chain, they make the pizza different - you can only get the original pizza at the main restaurants.

Good news - Berghoff is open again! Gone are the pushy waiters. Seems the closing a few years back busted the union. As far as the food, it was better in the old days!

As far as DePaul, Thursday morning is my annual visit taking over Floyd's brass class. In 1995 DePaul made it DR. Jacobs by awarding an honorary doctorate. We wanted to make sure all brass students heard Jacobs' teachings direct from the horse's mouth. Since he passed away on October 7, 1998, the decision was that I came in during the first week of October. The bad news - the class starts at 8 am so I have to fight rush hour traffic - yuk!

Looks a bit like I hijacked this thread - sorry. Hmmmm, who is that knocking at my door saying HIJACKER - COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP?!?!?!?

Seriously, Once I know what I'm doing - probably be over in the spring - we might have to have a bash at doing this. How big is your place, Brian???

That night at Berghoffs we ALL ordered roast goose, I think there were 11 of us, they didn't have enough so none of us had it. I think the waiter mumbled something about a whole lot of gooses being seated at one table!

The one on North Wells (which I think is the one you are talking about) is still a block north of Uno, but I would describe it as west--by about six blocks. Might be due west of Deu.

But I was thinking of the one on E. Superior, just east of Michigan. It's not quite as far north as I remembered it by two or three blocks--it's maybe four blocks north of Ohio. I was staying at the Drake when I ate there, and walked. Didn't have to wait in line at all.
