Well, as no-one has yet purchased my fantastically cool, blue DEG (Willson) tuba, I am putting it back in rotation for the more "theatrical" shows and venues, but I gots me a question....

Is is possible to paint on the fiberglass in some temporary fashion? I would like to decorate the bell stack for some upcoming Halloween shows. I remember for parades a buddy of mine use to put heavy coats of wax on his old car and would paint on the wax, so it could be removed later. Is something like this possible?

I absolutely don't want to harm the horn/fiberglass/finish in any way.

Suggestions?!?!

Good idea! I wonder if those static-cling vinyl decals would stick. I found some static-cling bats that might be good. Not incredibly creative but a start...

However, the robin's egg blue looks too "happy" for a Halloween gig. I want to make the whole thing look a bit more "sad/scary."

Never used anything this since the red elves for window decoration when I was a kid.

However it must possible to buy such folio in whole sheets in various colours. From that point the creative limits are wide open. Knife or scissors, exact or rough cuts? Number of colours and their permutations. Single or overlapping layers.

Yeah. I guess as long as it could be washed out and wasn't overly toxic, it wouldn't matter too much. I will be in a washable costume.

I had thought about the paint used by millions of elementary schools for their windows. Not sure what that is though...

That would be Tempera, but a lot of the paint chemistry has changed in the last few years. There is what is called washable paint (Crayola is one brand.) It should not stick permanently to a plastic surface, but you might want to try it out on a less obvious surface first.

The Stanford Band has used a variety of temperas, they wanted to be able to change the bell paintings each year. I wanted my bell art for my own horn to be more permanent so I sprayed it with a clear coat. That lasted for 15 years and I painted over everything with acrylics - that is still going strong.
