Alex 173

Post by Billy M. »

Out of curiosity, who here has played the 173 model CC Alexander. I saw it on Tony Clements' website and I wondered about this lil heard of horn. Does it compare well with its lil brother the 163? Intonation quirkiness? That famous Alex sound? Stuffiness? Good projection? All input is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have played two Alexander 173 tubas and several 163 tubas (including playing a 163 for 29+ years). The Alexander 173 is smaller then the 163, so I would consider the 173 the "little brother" to the 163. The intonation on the 173 models that I tried was better then the typical 163. The sound was what I would consider as an "Alexander sound", same focus but not as expansive as a 163. I found this tuba open in all ranges (not stuffy). It is my opinion that the 173 would work very well as a general purpose tuba (good for groups from quintet to orchestra). It is a well planned tuba with easy access to slides. The quality of craftsmanship is typical Alexander, excellent. I personally give the 173 high marks and would recommend this tuba for a "test drive" to anyone looking for a tuba.

good luck,
Mark
