According to the listing on IMSLP this piece calls for 6 trumpets, 8 horns, 6 trombones, 2 tubas, 2 timpani which seems to make it even less likely to be done. (because of finances) The score is currently unavailable via IMSLP because of copyright issues. A friend of mine has a score and if I'm able to get it, I'll look and let you know if it could be reduced to a standard orchestral brass section without serious compromise.

It annoys me, as it likely annoys many, that the score is note easily available for a study of the musical structures.

This said there may be no discrepancies between the numbers of trumpets and trombones quoted within this thread. The version bloke refers to is an arrangement which very likely has gone a long way in cutting down on the necessary numbers of players.

When Strauss worked with the Dresden Opera he could use all of their 16 horn players. Not all in the pit at the same time, but on and behind the stage. Again without seeing the actual score, but deducing from another Strauss score available on the web the spatial placement of large numbers of trumpets and drummers was part of his composing tools. If that also goes with the fanfare in question, that may cause problems in reducing the number of players.

Yes, this is the correct instrumentation. There are multiple arrangements which use less- done by a variety of people. I've never heard of a version using less than 4 tpts though.
