import euph differences?

A friend wants to get back into barifonium and I've found a used Schiller 3+1 comper in my area for 600. Pictures look pretty solid, bought new in 2009, lacquer with the case, and has a very slight "crinkle" in the back of the bell that's not showing up that well in the pictures.

Have there been any changes to these over the last few years? I was thinking of mentioning they can be had for 750 now and offering 500.

Not sure if there have been any changes to the Schiller or not. The compensator model (Schiller Elite) is a copy of the Yamaha 642. Jim Laabs sells the lacquer model for $885. I think the silver plate is around $1100, but not sure.

We picked it up for 500. The bell crease is there but not really noticeable. The horn plays very well though it seemed as though the comp range was a bit sharp. I really haven't played the horn that much (at the friend's place). 3rd is kinda sticky; next time I go over to see her I'll bring some valve oil but I think it might be the valve guide. No biggie.

I recently bought a MACK silver compensating 3+1 euphonium--absolutely fantastic instrument. Took 2-3 months from time of order/payment to delivery here at AmTrack station. A big +1 for Tom!

I have not had any problem with intonation on mine in the comp register (or elsewhere), but it does seem to like a fairly large mouthpiece. A real pleasure to play. The Wick 3AL is working well for me now, although for somewhat unrelated reasons I'm thinking of going the Doug Elliott route. I found that the SM mouthpieces just didn't seem to do as well, and some others have found the same (on a bunch of different euphs). Depends, of course, on what you want and how you play.

I've also switched from Alisyn to Yamaha synthetic oils and am using the light valve oil on my rotary horns and the regular on this euph. And I put the Steven Mead spring set in it -- which was a minor improvement, but worth it. The only real gripe I have about the horn is the water corks, which I didn't think were particularly well done. But less than five minutes work installing the Valentino ones fixed that (and on the tuba too!).
