smaller 1291 Bb? Easy to play, big sound for the size, great low register, nice intonation, leaner by default for the smaller size,...

Something like a front action Kanstul 33 or new king 2341, or a germanish piston bbb?

Bob - just get a 1291.
When someone of your size is sitting next to you with a larger BBb it won't seem too small.
If it's too big just blow hard through a closed throat and jaw - works for amateur players everywhere.

Regards

Gerard (who wishes his 1291 BBb was at least a size larger).

Hahaha! Hilarious, and sadly, very true.

Bob, what about a MW HoJo?

The HoJo is it! Just what you are asking for. You should try one.

Whether Joe is serious or not, I'm always pleasantly surprised how easily one can get around on a 186. I always like them, think they're probably too small for what I want, and realize I'm probably wrong about that too!

Interesting. I would prefer something on the shorter and cheaper end....

I think he is serious. A 186 in its CC or BBb incarnation is still, to my mind, the PERFECT all-around instrument.

Chuck, I certainly don't disagree. It's just that sometimes 186 is a serious answer around here, sometimes it's a joke non-answer. TubeNet (like Camelot) is a silly place...

Meinl Weston makes a "Handy" model that sounds like you need to play one. Myself, I like B&S and my GR51 aka PT 605 is agreeably big but not huge, and many dollars less than some others.

184/185/186. Best sound, least effort, and you can even have the leadpipe adjusted for height with little expense.

Yeah, but have they ever soldered one on top of the bell?
In all seriousness, maybe the new MW 3450 is right up Bob's alley?

A GOOD "Piggy" BBb (realizing that the CC was really the 'piggy' model).

I get the sense Bob would prefer a little resistance... the Cerveny Arion (or Opera) is a very open instrument, but quite good!

I don't know how he feels about rotors, either ;-) Bob?

Preference is for a piston 3/4 horn.

You don't ask for much, huh ;-)

The Jupiter 4v piston 3/4 is okay... certainly for the $$$. But for a pro horn with pistons, the only one with a good rep is the HoJo.

Probably around 3000 tops tops (-2000 strongly preferred! anymore than the first figure I'd be looking at nice bass tubas), depending on if I can finally land an ADOS/mob or get a real job (somewhat likely on either front). And if I can keep my mitts off another contrabone. I had more in the tuba fund but then I found out one of my younger brothers was still in college.

Basically, something small, easy playing, with pistons, an easy low range, and good intonation. This would primarily be a low quintet horn. I might get behind small C's over small Bb's in theory but I want a Bb.
