I suspect the price won't be available until the "official" production of this model begins.

But let's theorize -- since I've heard it's the same valve cluster, but with slightly smaller bell and bow(s), should we expect it to be any MORE expensive then the 181?

Arguments for each option that come to mind --

More expensive: new development?, weaker dollar today?
Less expensive: less material / same labor?, can't price it more than the larger 181?

My guess -- the 181 and 281 models are close enough in size (material cost) that Miraphone will give the 281 virtually the identical price tag (I'm guessing $500 less for the 281). The customer then has the option of two slightly different models (probably marketed as 4/4 and 5/4) for about the same price.

Roger Lewis also mentioned at the time the Euro replaced the DM that Miraphone was the only company that was dealing with them on a "dollar" basis. Their prices continue to be the lowest for the production horns, but I'm not sure if that trend will continue. I also would like to give the redesigned 1291 a test run. Got to wait for Frankfurt.

The last word I got from Miraphone is that the 281 F tuba will begin showing up after the beginning of April. The list price is indeed higher for the new 282. Quite simply, you have to pay for the R&D of a new horn that is of low production numbers. Compared to the numbers of BBb tubas sold, F tubas are an after thought. When we get the horns, we'll have the final discount price at that time.
