This Conn sousaphone is available for sale here in Austin. It is a bit rough, but the guy is only asking $350 for it. He says there is a crack under the tape. He says the valves and slides move and it plays fine. In another picture the bell appears OK. Not sure which model it is, but I'm thinking 22K. He says it was made around 1976. Would that mean it was made in Abilene?

Should I be concerned about the rust? Any thoughts on what would be required to repair the crack? I've asked how much of the taped area is cracked and am waiting on a response. I've also asked about whether he has the leadpipe and bits. Is $350 reasonable or should I talk him down?

I should be able to see it in person this weekend, but wanted to get some opinions before I go to look at it.

If he doesn't have them... an upper mouthpipe will set you back about $150 retail... probably less from some sources. Be sure to order the set for Conn 20/22K or you will get King stuff which will not work.

At any rate... even with the investment in additional money for the neck and bits... the horn is a 'steal' if it's complete as shown and doesn't have any major damage to the pistons, etc.

The crack under the tape is no 'biggie'.

It is hard to go wrong for $350 for a sousaphone like that, as long as the valves work.

Thanks for the info. I have not heard anything further from the seller, but I think he is traveling. Hopefully I will be able to go see the sousaphone this weekend.
