I prefer spinning around and then letting go to achieve a longer distance. Although with those newer replicas, you can really put some power behind it to get 'em at least ten feet, maybe more if it's a 3/4.

I prefer to hold the bottom bow in my hands and toss it end-over-end as far as I can . . . if it doesn't make a complete rotation, it doesn't count.

I disagree, I think it'd be MUCH easier to throw a smaller tuba

It seems that as important (if not more) than the size is the bell design. Bell forward seems less aerodynamic. However, a detachable bell would be a definite advantage so you can pitch it in two pieces... I regularly reduce things (via sawzall) in order to pitch them.

I believe there are some models that should be pitched and feathered.

tuba toss rules
1. Maximum 3 spins in a circle.
2. feet must remain in designated circle
3. Bounces count
4. Extra points if the tuba produces a tone in flight, the lower the better. Artificial membranes in the mouthpiece to create such tones are not allowed.

So now getting back to the original concept what is the advantage/disadvantage of a CC BB Eb F tuba.
I like the Eb because I am mostly an upper brass man (Hangs head) "forgive me I have Sinned" I read the paper as treble cleff and change the key signature down a 3rd (C=A, F=d etc)

There are no advantages to F, Eb, CC, or BBb. Just disadvantages.

On this other recent thread, people talk about detachable bells, leadpipes and whatnot.
When it comes to hitting more people with one hurl, it may be benefitial to loosen all screws before taking aim...

Does it count as a scratch, if the bell comes off the horn before the rest of the horn is thrown?

in the case of removable bells, bell must must be at least 26% of the distance thrown. this rule was the result of the great sousaphone controversy during the tuba toss of 1909 when a sousaphone was first introduced to the games. Special note Bertha Wanger, nee Conn won the tournament at a distance of 17 feet 3 inches.

reminds me of the old joke, "What is the range of a tuba???"

15 feet if you have a good arm....

The 15 foot mark is to qualify for the tuba games.

You should also be aware that the Glascow convention to be held in 2013 will discuss if helicons should be band from compition as they fly much like a frisbee. The conns are that the bell acts as a break to the gyroscopic spin and there for aerodynamics are thus canceled.
