Hello everyone,

I play tuba as some of you may know, and I am going to start picking up trombone again. I was wondering if there was any tips y'all could give me on buzzing etc. I buzz now do the "siren" drill and chromatic slowly, but would like to get some more ideas from you guys. Once I get the hang of it again I will be switching to bass bone.

Thanks,

Nick Phillips

Nick -

Just remember to keep your embouchure firm and unchanging across registers. You can change vowel shapes for different registers and (drop you jaw below the staff), but no smiling on high notes. I would suggest that mouthpiece practice only be used for 5 minutes or so to warm up, then spend time on the actual horn doing the real work (mindful long tones, lip slurs, and scales)

I go back and forth every day or so, sometimes during the same gig. Just get a bass bone and jump in there. Keep everything as similar as you can between the two. As far as I can tell, the same principles apply to both.

Sweet thanks! I keep my embouchure as firm as I can. It is hard coming form tuba but works when done right!

Thanks,

Firm?!?

Not really (IMHO). Centered. You may need to slow your air some, but really it's about a more narrow center, and tuned solely with the slide. Pactice slow glissandi and stay in the very center of the sound. You'll have a pile of habits to break to put the pitch in your hand and not in your lips!

All brass playing is relaxed and air-based. Just allow yourself to fill it in a relaxed manner, and practice natural slurs immediately to figure out your legato playing quickly.
