Material won't hurt the brass?

To the professionals technicians:
Is there a material of choice for wrapping around certain parts of the tuba that get touched a lot? I have fairly acid skin and tend to eat through metal over time with my fingers; I'd like to wrap something around my first valve slide (raw) that will protect it but not eventually mess up the metal underneath. How about protecting the small amount of lacquer left on my tuba - is there a good material for that?

Leather? Tennis grip tape? Suggestions?

Thanks!

Naugahyde?! Well, I never...do you know how many Naugas it takes to have enough for one hyde?!!! :P

(When I was a boy a local furniture store advertising their new line of overstuffed recliners actually used that as part of the national advertising campaign!)
